How Old Do You Have to Be to Drive for Uber in Australia?

Victoria sets Uber's driver age at 21. Here is what that means for licences, delivery work and hiring a car.

If you are 21 and thinking about Uber, or 19 and wondering whether you are too young, the Uber driver age requirement in Australia is not one number for every state and every Uber product. It depends on where you drive and whether you carry passengers or food. Hiring from a car rental in Brunswick business adds a second age rule, because rental companies set their own.

This guide gives you Uber's published ages as of 4 November 2026, the other Victorian rules that matter as much as age, and what changes when you need a car. We write from SOZO Rent a Car, a local business with over 30 years in the industry, where most vehicles are hired to drivers aged 25 or over. That is higher than Uber's own age rule, and it catches a lot of younger drivers out.

Rules change, so confirm the current requirements in the Uber app or help centre before you commit to anything. Uber and the state regulator have the final say.

Uber driver age requirement Australia: the short answer

To drive passengers with Uber in Victoria, you must be at least 21. Uber's Australian page sets the minimum at 20, and at 21 in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. Uber Eats delivery partners can start from 18. These figures come from Uber's Australian driver requirements pages, checked on 4 November 2026.

If you live in Melbourne's inner north, Victoria's number is the one that counts. A 20-year-old in Brunswick cannot drive Uber rides yet, even though a 20-year-old in some other states can.

Age is only the first gate in Victoria

Meeting the age rule does not put you on the road. Uber lists further requirements for Victoria, and the state regulator adds its own.

1.     Licence tenure. Uber asks for a full (unrestricted) Australian or New Zealand driver's licence held for at least 6 months. A probationary licence does not count.

2.     CPV driver accreditation. Victoria requires Commercial Passenger Vehicle (CPV) driver accreditation from Safe Transport Victoria, which was previously Commercial Passenger Vehicles Victoria. Applicants must be medically fit and pass a national criminal history check. Allow several weeks.

3.     Right to work. Uber requires citizenship, residency, or a visa that allows work in Australia, and may run a VEVO check.

4.     Insured driver status. You must be listed as an insured driver for the vehicle you plan to drive.

5.     A registered vehicle. The car must meet Uber's vehicle rules for your city, pass inspection, and be registered as a commercial passenger vehicle.

6.     Documents and background check. Expect to upload your licence, ID, and a profile photo, then pass Uber's background check.

Fees and processing times belong to the regulator and Uber, so check them at the source rather than trusting an old blog post, including this one.

Under 21: what Uber Eats changes

If you are 18 to 20 in Victoria, Uber rides are off the table for now. Uber Eats lists 18 as its minimum age for delivery partners, but delivery has its own sign-up, requirements, and vehicle options. Check the Uber Eats driver page, not the rides page.

Car hire does not close the gap. SOZO's hire age is 25 or over on most vehicles, so a younger driver needs another route to a car. Use the waiting time well: keep your record clean and keep your licence history building, because tenure counts toward the 6-month rule.

The 21 to 25 gap: when Uber says yes and a hire company says no

Uber's age rule and a rental company's age rule are separate. At SOZO, most vehicles need a driver aged 25 or over. The result depends on your age:

•     25 or over. You meet the age rule on the Corolla Hybrid, Cerato, RAV4 Hybrid and Carnival. You still need your licence and ID, a refundable deposit, and a credit card in your own name.

•     21 to 24. You meet Uber's Victorian age rule but not SOZO's age rule on those models. The Camry Hybrid age is not published, so ask the team. Otherwise, compare other hirers, whose age policies vary, or use a vehicle you can legitimately drive where you are listed as an insured driver.

•     18 to 20. Uber Eats may be possible. Uber rides are not, and SOZO does not hire most vehicles to under 25.

A year range means a car from that band may be available, not that every year is on the lot. As a cost example, a Corolla Hybrid for 7 days is 7 x $60 = $420, with fuel, tolls and fines extra.

SOZO supplies the car and the stated $20 per day comprehensive insurance. It does not guarantee Uber approval for any vehicle, and your CPV accreditation, ABN and Uber account stay with you. Our Uber car rental in Brunswick page lists the vehicles suited to current Uber needs.

Practical steps for your age group

•     Check your licence date. If your full licence is under 6 months old, count the days to your eligibility date. Do not pay for a car you cannot yet use.

•     Start accreditation early. Apply to Safe Transport Victoria before you collect a car, because processing takes weeks.

•     Ask about age before you apply. Message the Brunswick team on +61 430 090 545 or WhatsApp. A two-minute check beats a wasted trip to Cozens Street.

•     Bring the right pickup items. Licence, ID, and a Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Diners card in your own name for the deposit authorisation. Cash, debit, and prepaid cards are not accepted for it.

•     Book ahead. Same-day collection is possible if a car is free, and the depot is open Monday to Saturday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Rental costs may be deductible for rideshare work, but this is general information, not accounting advice. Ask the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) or a registered tax agent.

What your age means for your next step

If you are 25 or over and meet the licence and accreditation rules, the car is the easy part: hire is daily or weekly, with no lock-in contract and week-to-week extension. If you are 21 to 24, you can drive for Uber but need a different car source, or a conversation with the team about the Camry Hybrid. If you are under 21, delivery is the realistic Uber option.

See car rental pricing and the hire rules in our FAQs, then talk to the Brunswick team on +61 430 090 545 or WhatsApp to confirm availability before you visit 15 Cozens St.

Frequently asked questions

How old do you have to be to drive for Uber in Victoria?

Uber's Australian driver page sets the minimum at 21 for Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania, and 20 elsewhere. You also need a full licence held for 6 months in Victoria and CPV driver accreditation. Confirm current rules in the Uber app before you apply, because requirements can change.

Can you drive Uber at 18 or 19 in Australia?

Not for passenger rides. Uber's ride requirements start at 20 or 21 depending on the state. Uber Eats lists 18 as the minimum age for delivery partners, so younger drivers usually look at delivery instead. Check the Uber Eats page for current vehicle options and requirements in your city.

Can I hire a car for Uber if I am under 25?

At SOZO Rent a Car, most vehicles require a driver aged 25 or over, so under-25s cannot hire them. The Camry Hybrid age is not published, so ask the team. Other hire companies set their own age policies, so compare them. Uber approval is never guaranteed with any hire car.

Do I need a full licence to drive Uber in Victoria?

Yes. Uber asks for a full, unrestricted Australian or New Zealand licence held for at least 6 months in Victoria. A probationary licence does not meet the rule. Victorian CPV driver accreditation also requires a licence of that tenure, medical fitness and a national criminal history check.

Do I need CPV accreditation as well as meeting the age rule?

Yes. Meeting the age rule is only the start. Victoria requires CPV driver accreditation, and the vehicle must be registered as a commercial passenger vehicle. These steps belong to the driver, not to SOZO. Apply early, because accreditation can take several weeks to come through.
